ISO 9001:2015 Transition

The new version of ISO 9001 (known as ISO 9001:2015) was published on 30th September 2015.  The new version of the standard incorporates a number of changes which are designed to make the standard more effective and more user-friendly in its application.

The main changes to ISO 9001 are:

  • Changes to the structure of the standard to comply with the High Level Structure (also known as Annex SL)
  • The introduction of risk-based thinking as a fundamental concept within the standard
  • An increased emphasis on strong and visible leadership
  • Changes in terminology designed to make the standard more applicable to service-based organisations
  • Greater flexibility in the documentation and communication of information
  • Requirement to consider the context of the organisation and the requirements of the organisation's stakeholders
  • An increased emphasis on knowledge management

Organisations certified to ISO 9001 will need to update their quality management system to meet the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 and be assessed against the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 by their certification body.  Organisations have until September 2018 to complete this transition.

Our recommendation is that organisations do not delay adopting ISO 9001:2015.  The sooner you start the transition process, the greater flexibility you have should the unexpected occur within your business.
